Agricultural education was provided for in the organization of the University by the Minnesota territorial legislature in 1851. When the first state legislature convened in 1858, one of the items approved during the inaugural session was an unfunded proposal to establish an “Agricultural Experiment Farm and Agricultural College” at Glencoe. Harry Snyder was born on January 26, 1867 in Cherry Valley, New York. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University in 1889. After graduation, Snyder worked as an instructor and assistant chemist at Cornell (1889-1891). Snyder came to the University of Minnesota in 1891 as a chemist for the Agricultural Experiment Station. He was promoted to professor of agricultural chemistry in 1892. Snyder accepted an additional role as professor of agricultural chemistry and soils in 1907. He left th...
